A few months ago, I noticed that Alfred, our hard-working live-in robotic vacuum cleaner, was starting to slip a little. At first, I’d just find tiny balls of fluff, or a stray bristle or two in his wake. Then, Alfred became disoriented and lodged himself under a chair in the living room or in my daughter’s closet.
