This story from March suggest that an order for 150 Seagliders was already placed. I’m assuming that this was in error and simply that Seagliders are competing for a 150-robot contract. But there is now the real possibility of another decent sized business line for iRobot. Tags: iRobot, Seaglider

Robots of the Future Will Show Empathy, Be Good Listeners [Robots]
July 19th, 2008 — blog, irobot
European researchers are developing a software that will give robots the power to learn when a person is sad, happy or angry. The Feelix Growing project is putting together simple robots that can detect different parameters—facial expressions, voice and proximity—to determine emotional states. The aim of the project is to develop a robot that can serve humans with special needs, such as the ill and the elderly. Make it stop: Roomba with chimp head
July 19th, 2008 — blog, irobot
This little guy scares the daylights out of me: a Roomba topped with an animatronic chimp head. No purpose is claimed, but I think it’s safe to say it’s for scaring pets and children. Today was “detox day.” You know, the day after a trip, where everybody whines more and needs more sleep and the chaos is just MORE. That was today. It culminated in the kitchen where the child I told NOT to touch anything poured sugar all over the floor. Then while I was cleaning up his mess he stuck his finger in the batter. And the phone rang. And Ellen followed me around with a healthy whine. I put the Roomba to work on the sugar, but not before we’d spread around a good layer of grit in
