Lots More Warbots On the Way
Thousands more warbots are being readied to hit the ground in Iraq. In December, after all the lawsuits, the private eyes and the backroom deals, iRobot finally wrestled away the biggest ground-robotics contract in military history from its former employee and his secret partner. This “unmanned surge” was worth up to $286 million and 3,000 machines. And it didn’t look like it would be topped any time soon. But appearances can be deceiving in the world of military robots. Turns out, there’s b

More Fun than Watching Grass Grow
“Reduce emissions to 1990 levels,” is a phrase you hear a lot among global warming go-getters of various stripes. It’s the goal set by the Kyoto Protocol, but it has a life of its own as a handy carbon emissions benchmark. But the truly hardcore seem to be going with something more like 1890 levels: When my fella and I bought our house last year, we tried to make thoughtful decisions as we accessorized our new lives… So we bought a reel mower — completely manual, no gas, no cord, just a few

*is in Roomba trance*
Every gimp-girl should have a Roomba. They should issue them to you at the rheumatologist’s office. “Yeah, your body’s pretty messed up. Here’s your Roomba.” Saves my hands, saves my back, saves time. This is not a paid endorsement, despite the fact that I am dating a cute roboticist. It’s just that the Roomba seriously makes keeping a clean-ish house *so* much easier.

WowWee Tri-Bot reviewed: low cost, tilt-sensor fun
When WowWee’s Tri-Bot launches this Summer, it’ll be one of the cheapest ways to get your hands on the nifty three-wheel omni-directional base from the company. With an expected price of $99, the robot may lack the (creepy) animated face of Mr Personality but it does have a tilt-sensor remote control that, in a manner similar to the Wiimote, can guide the robot around just by gesturing. Robotics-obsessive Robert Oschler has scored some pre-release time with the Tri-Bot, and you can check out hi

Miniature robot leaps 27 times its body size
Researchers at the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at EPFL have developed a jumping robot inspired by the grasshopper. The 5cm model uses a 0.6-gram pager motor and a cam to charge two torsion springs, which trigger a jump from the robot’s 1.3mm carbon rod feet. The 7-gram robot can jump 4.6 feet (1.4 m), more than 27 times its body size, and ten times the distance of any existing jumping robot… Tags: Robot Related Articles: Robot climbs 1640-foot cliff at Grand Canyon Epson develops Wor

Military Recruits Thousands More Warbots for New Unmanned Surge

This “unmanned surge” was worth up to $286 million and 3,000 machines. And it didn’t look like it would be topped any time soon. But appearances can be deceiving in the world of military robots. Turns out, there’s been a second unmanned surge. And yesterday, iRobot’s rival, Foster-

I Welcome our new robot overlords
Spotted in Engadget: iRobot’s various military robots are already capable of packing some weaponry, but it looks like Metal Storm is set to give their arsenal a considerable boost, with it recently demonstrating its remotely-operated FireStorm weapons system on one of iRobot’s standard Warrior platforms. That system essentially makes the ammunition the only moving part in the weapon, with it able to fire bullets electronically at a rate of thousands of rounds per minute (or “theoretically” ev
