Robot Tank Test Drive
March 13th, 2008 — blog, irobot
OK, OK. It’s not exactly a robot tank — the thing isn’t even the size of Bradley Fighting Vehicle, let alone an Abrams. But it is pretty cool that the folks at Jalopnik got to remotely drive around the Black Knight unmanned combat vehicle demonstrator; they’ve even got the video to prove it. It doesn’t seem like the Black Knight was allowed to drive itself around, however, despite its maker’s claims that the machine can “plan routes, maneuver on the planned route, and avoid obstacles — al

Q & A with Burgandy

What is Harry’s obsession with talking to himself? Christina Hall He’s trying to outsmart the monkey. Why won’t Sonic (the drive-in company, not the blue hedgehog) build a restaurant closer than 200 miles from Chicago? ConnectR to let loose from hiding
March 13th, 2008 — blog, irobot
iRobot’s ConnectR remote-presence robot apparently will come out from hiding next week, when a company named Trinity Convergence — apparently a software partner on the project with iRobot — will display it at a telephony conference in San Jose, Calif. The product has been virtually under wraps since it was announced by iRobot CEO Colin Angle last fall, and has been delayed, presumably for upgrades/redesigns. Here is the press release (thx, Micro): RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — 03/12/08 — Foc

PackBot Goes Kite-Surfing
March 13th, 2008 — blog, irobot
This isn’t the dumbest idea in the history of military robotics. But it sure as sugar ain’t the smartest, either. A few years back, the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command and the Armaments Research, Development, and Engineering Center funded a team from iRobot — makers of the PackBot line of military unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs — to see if they could make their square, squat machine fly. CNET reports what happened next: They came up with the Griffon (PDF), an iRobot
